Engaging students

My primary goal in teaching is to help students understand and practice scientific thinking; to ask clear questions about the world and come up with ways to answer them.

I think experiential, hands-on learning is critical for Earth science and try to engage students in active research projects.

Juneau Icefield Research Program

I am an Associate Director of the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP), and a member its Academic Council and Faculty. We are an interdisciplinary summer school focusing on polar science. JIRP is an immersive experience and provides training in expeditionary research, glacier travel, field techniques, and fundamental science.

Students participate in summer-long group research projects. I lead a project in climatology and isotope geochemistry.

If you are an undergraduate student looking for a field school focusing in glaciology and climate science, you should apply!

JIRP water isotope project

This is a video I made as an introduction to the research project I lead on the Juneau Icefield Research Program. It is intended for students on the program as a primer on stable water isotopes, their use in climatology and Earth science, and the long term monitoring project I’ve been running along with Eric Klein at the University of Alaska.

The video is not well made and a little embarrassing. But it has some nice time lapses in it!
